EirGrid plc. is a leading Irish energy business, dedicated to the provision of transmission and market services for the benefit of electricity consumers. Its purposes are the daily management of the Irish national grid, the operation of the wholesale power market, and the development of high voltage infrastructure to serve Ireland’s economy.

Given the critical nature of EirGrid’s operations it was deemed necessary to further upgrade
the physical and electronic controls in its Head office by using security gates. An EU tender
was advertised and suppliers were pre-qualified to tender and Blue Wall were awarded the
contract to design and install the system in conjunction with EirGrid design team Henry J
Lyons Architects and M&E Consultants AxisEng.

Automatic Systems SL900 SmartLane high speed glass gates capable of 60 person per
minute throughput in conjunction with PNG glass swing gates were installed on three
floors where access can be gained to the building, integrated with the existing ACT WinPro
access management system and the Panasonic Digital CCTV system. Anti-Passback controls,
integration with exiting door access, Intruder, CCTV and intercoms were included to make
the system intelligent.

Blue Wall were responsible for the project management, detailed design, provision of
CAD drawings, supporting design calculations and carrying out the complete installation
including draining and testing the underfloor heating, all necessary building work and
reinstatement of fire breaks to fitting and commissioning the turnstiles, access controls and
CCTV and interfacing with the existing systems.

The Facilities Manager Liam Griffin’s comment after the project was completed was:

The system was installed in a live environment with significant staff and visitor activity on a daily basis. The site also contains critical systems and activities running 24/7 and in addition to EirGrid requirements, consideration was also required for the building owner and other tenants.
